Indeed, it was the only version available for Apple computers. Although perhaps released toward the nadir of the command-line world - and certainly after the introduction of the Macintosh and Microsoft's Windows - it offered a word processing experience for Apple II users that DOS users had enjoyed for quite a few years. Some of those were not so successful, but WordPerfect 1.0 and 1.1 for the Apple //e and //c was one of the company's sales stars. Not content to rest on its successes, SSI/WordPerfect Corporation had by 1986 desired to be on as many platforms as possible. The same 4.0 rocketed WordPerfect to the top of the charts virtually sealing WordStar's fate and keeping a struggling Microsoft Word at bay for at least a few more years.

During the late 1980's, WordPerfect was THE standard word processor for DOS based PCs in big business. With roots as far back as 1977 and a first appearance on Data General computers with the name SSI*WP, the software that became WordPerfect was a product businesses knew intimately by 1986.
